I’m not especially a hygge aesthetic type of person, so New York winters can feel like a bit of a drab existence. The days compress, the light thins, and even the rhythm of the city seems to slow into something muted and more inward. Nonetheless, positivity is a mindset, and lately I’ve been gravitating toward the idea of translating winter blues into the warmest blues. So these are some of the picks that bring my skin to the life and coziness we long for in the winter, the things that feel less like skincare and more like emotional reassurance for surviving the season.
African Botanics Fleur De Rose Cream Cleanser *No longer produced*: This is from before their relaunch, back when the brand felt a bit more experimental with their collection. It’s not one I reach for regularly because it’s genuinely like a cream that just glides on and off. There is no sudsing and no lather. You work it in for the slip and simply hope it removes things. But during the winter, it’s a hug for the face wrapped in a rose scented cream. Comforting and moisturizing, it leaves behind that welcomed layer of soft replenishing goodness. And while I can’t speak to whether it clears pores or dislodges dead skin cells, that’s not really the point of this cleanser. It’s about comfort in the cleansing step for times when the idea of running the faucet already feels like too much. In cold temperatures, the ritual itself should feel warm, and this one does.
F. Miller Toning Mist: Ever since the last post where I talked about how the real purpose of a face mist is to introduce meaningful water based ingredients as opposed to “water plus essential oils” (which so many mists rely on), I’ve been getting questions about which ones actually qualify. This one absolutely does. It’s a lovely mix of hydrosols, predominantly rose, paired with water based botanical extracts selected for their anti inflammatory and toning benefits, like yarrow, nettle, and calendula. It feels refined and dare I say precious, in that gorgeous fine mist way. In the winter, it feels restorative in the sense that your skin is being lightly rinsed in botanicals rather than stripped by the cold. That light kiss from a mist that feels as if it dropped straight from a rose petal is the definition of skin therapy this time of year.
Gentler Essentials Vital Fermented Essence: This is vitality juice for the skin made of over 90 percent fermented actives that combine the best of Asian beauty. Galactomyces is the ferment that put SK II and JBeauty on the map, and here it is paired with regenerative fermented ingredients and PDRN alternative peptides that define the next wave of KBeauty. It is unscented, though if you have a keen sense of smell, it does carry a slightly medicinal undertone. It wears like water, but with a plush comforting oomph that hints at how active it truly is underneath the surface.
Finally, what does it do, exactly? It’s like a life coach for your skin. You start using it and the first day you think, “oh it feels just nice and pleasant, I hope it does something.” And before you know it, pores look smaller, texture looks smoother, the skin looks brighter like you have been eating well and resting even when you know you have not, and the lines you swear are getting deeper suddenly seem to retreat. And while hydration is clearly a key part of an essence, you find that your glass is never empty, which is kind of hard to achieve for an East Coast winter. It’s comfort, it’s hydration, it’s magic sauce, as I summarized in my previous post, it’s an infusion of life force, get it.
Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum: A blast from the past, and one I keep coming back to. What initially drew me to it is that it was one of the few green beauty eye serums that is actually a serum and not an oil, and it contains a peptide, hexapeptide 11, that supports skin firmness and elasticity. The texture is perfect, light enough to absorb, weighty enough to feel moisturizing, and gentle enough for daily use. This winter, it feels like an old friend reentering the routine and reminding me of why we got on so well in the first place. Everything is as remembered, but better because it reminds you of all the things you forgot that made you love it in the first place.
French Farmacie Elixir Exfoliant: In the winter, when the skin barrier is already working overtime and in need of backup, I’ve found myself reaching for this instead of a traditional acid toner. Elixir Exfoliant is a face oil that gently exfoliates, which feels especially aligned with a winter routine built around comfort. It includes natural AHAs derived from caviar lime, papaya, and apple, ingredients that help support cell turnover without overwhelming the skin. And that matters, because one of the things we overlook about winter is that our skin turnover slows down, leading to that familiar dullness. This one clears away the old and brings in the new, keeping the complexion fresh and alive through a season that can otherwise feel a bit bleak.
Gentlerist Modern Alchemist: I think face oils are the cornerstone category in green beauty. Even for people who don’t typically gravitate toward oils, winter has a way of convincing them otherwise, because nothing protects, cushions, and restores quite like a good one. Modern Alchemist earns its place here for that exact reason.
It’s rich, plush, and deeply nourishing, ideal for winter skin when dryness and barrier fatigue are unavoidable. It’s built around a powerful blend of botanical oils, avocado, argan, borage, cloudberry, and enhanced by a Bio Retinol Complex that includes bakuchiol, beta carotene, and micro algae for real regenerative support. But what truly makes it exceptional for winter is the Omega Lipid Complex, strengthened with biomimetic ceramides, phospholipids, and vegan cholesterol. These go beyond what botanical oils alone can do to restore elasticity, support density, and reinforce the barrier.
Gentlerist recently advised thinking of it as the face oil equivalent of a weighted blanket, and that’s exactly what it is. It’s comforting, it provides body to the skin, and it lets it know it is taken care of. The barrier, the dryness, the hydration lock, all secured. All you have to look forward to is soft, plumped, dewy skin.
Tatcha The Indigo Calming Cream: Of course I was going to include a moisturizer in a winter round up, and what better one to include in one on Winter Blues than the Indigo Calming Cream, which really is the personification of this entire theme.
So let’s get a couple of things out of the way. Is it moisturizing? Yes. It’s a gorgeous cream that is thick and weighty, but chemically elegant in the sense that it has the perfect balance of water and oil so it never feels balmy or oily, and instead just feels like a good reliable slab of a moisturizer. Is it calming and soothing? I usually hesitate to answer that because anyone can be reactive to anything, but indigo is generally considered a strong anti inflammatory. It contains compounds like tryptanthrin and indirubin that promote healing and reduce redness. It is also recognized by the National Eczema Association and includes 2 percent colloidal oat in the formula, so I would say there is a very good chance your skin will love this, like mine did.
At the end of the day, winter has a way of forcing us inward. It asks us to slow down, to recalibrate, to pay closer attention to what actually makes us feel okay with our own skin. These products are about support and creating moments of care in a season (and time) that can feel unforgiving. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the years, it’s that skin responds best when we stop asking it to perform and instead focus on sustaining it. Winter blues don’t disappear, but they can soften. And that act is warmth itself.
You’ve always been one of my favorite beauty writers because the way you talk about products is just so real and aspirational at the same time. I love these picks. What would you say is the better product from Kahina: Eye Serum or Eye Cream?
Lovely! Love – and missed – your posts :). I can’t wait for the Gentlerist essence to, hopefully, be available in Europe soon. I, too, love the new version of modern alchemist. I also recently went back to the kahina eye serum – and love its thoughtfulness and potency.
Does Modern Alchemist still have the nice honey-rose scent like it did from YULI? Would love to try!
I just started using the Gentler Essentials essence from your recommendation, and I LOVE it. OMG it’s so … passive, like it doesn’t call attention in that way where I’m like “okay but what is it really going to do?” and then a week in, I’m like “….. I should think about getting another bottle to have as backup in case I run out.”
